Paragraphe

In the communal forest of Bédoin, two high-altitude forest plots (one covered with black pine and the other with mountain pine) are currently experiencing decline and a lack of natural regeneration, mainly due to an increased frequency of drought episodes.

To address this issue, a reforestation project has been launched on a 3.3-hectare area. The plan involves enrichment planting using tree species that are more resistant to climate change and are already found at lower elevations in the region. The objective is to foster a more diverse and resilient forest ecosystem.

Two tree species were selected: Atlas cedar, whose upward migration is being supported through this planting initiative, and Cephalonian fir, a Mediterranean species that has been locally tested for several decades.

In autumn 2022, 2,140 Atlas cedars were planted, along with fencing or individual protections to safeguard the young trees from wildlife.

In 2024, the second phase of the project took place with the planting of 800 Cephalonian firs, after allowing time to collect seeds and grow the seedlings in a nursery.

Monitoring of the plantations is ongoing to ensure successful establishment and adaptation to local environmental conditions.

In autumn 2024, children from the local elementary school took part in a tree planting day alongside volunteers. Each student also got the opportunity to name the tree they planted.
