The LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) is a French organization dedicated to the protection of bird species and their habitats. While its initial mission focused on protecting birds, its initiatives now cover the broader goal of preserving biodiversity as a whole: species protection, habitat conservation, and environmental education and awareness. The association has over 46,000 members and 5,000 active volunteers, making it the leading nature conservation organization in France.
The Grand Albert and Petit Coquet are ancient forest ponds created by monks in the Middle Ages. They hold significant heritage value both in the Rhône-Alpes region and nationally, as they are home to extremely rare dragonflies and plant species. Unfortunately, the Grand Albert dried up about ten years ago due to the breach of the main dam. While restoration and complementary development work have already been carried out on this structure, the support from the SIDAS World Foundation is focused on the ecological restoration of the Grand Albert and the conservation of the Petit Coquet.
The main goal of the project is to refill the Grand Albert pond with water so that it can once again support rare and protected flora and fauna, and to make it accessible to the public, as it is located within 17 hectares of natural habitat dedicated to wildlife.
